PAC Seeks Your Support

Dear Fellow Psychologists,

Our PAC coffers are running on empty while the future of the practice of Psychology in Texas is now at a crossroads.  Psychologists, currently licensed by an independent agency, are on the cusp of becoming an “endangered species.”

As you are aware, the Legislature considered bills this year to abolish the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychology (TSBEP), consolidating it with masters’ level mental health practitioners, in addition to the elimination of the oral exam and the post-doc year.  This “dumbing down” of our profession should concern every Licensed Psychologist who has worked so hard to obtain a doctoral level degree in order to practice at the highest level.

The Legislature will come back in special session on July 18th to determine the fate of the TSBEP. This is where your Texas Psychological Association Political Action Committee (TPA PAC) comes in.  TPA has been gaining visibility and a stronger voice in the legislative process in the past few years, and your PAC has provided the financial resources to make this happen.   In fact, this year, in addition to these typical donations, your PAC made extra contributions to TPA to provide for the software platform, Voter Voice, as well as for an experienced, professional lobbyist  during the regular session dedicated to Sunset issues, including the Consolidation Bill.

Regardless of your feelings regarding “politics” or politicians this is the reality we live in.  It’s a three-legged stool:  the TPA Legislative Committee monitors all legislation which might affect psychologists, the TPA Grassroots Committee mobilizes psychologists to lobby legislators for particular bills, and the TPA PAC provides the financial support in order to build relationships with key legislators who help support our profession.

While your membership in TPA is vitally important, NONE of the membership dues can be used for political contributions.  Therefore, it is ONLY through the TPA PAC that psychologists can be used to make political contributions.  Also, many of you may have donated to the Save our Profession Fund, but none of these donations can be used for political contributions either.

You are eligible to be a full voting member of the TPA PAC for a contribution of $100 per year, although larger donations are encouraged.  Also, even if you have previously donated to the PAC, additional donations are needed and encouraged.  Any contributions you make can be designated specifically for Sunset advocacy.  Psychology is in a crisis.  But there is something you can do RIGHT NOW!  Click on this link and donate to your PAC:
