Communications Internship – Texas Psychological Association

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Are you ready to take the Communications field by storm? If so, you are going to need the skills and relevant work experience to get your foot in the door of your first communications job. Communications is as broad as the industries in which depend upon it – nonprofit, corporate, agency, academia. And there is nothing that can compete with, or help you narrow down your career path like, hands-on experience. Through this semester-long, communications internship you will have the unique opportunity to work alongside the Director of Marketing and Public Relations in numerous communication-related facets of this nonprofit association.

This internship provides experience in learning that communications IS as multifaceted as it seems, and the communications intern has the opportunity to see how the communications efforts of our association permeate throughout all association business.

WORK WITH AN ORGANIZATION THAT MAKES STATEWIDE IMPACT: The Texas Psychological Association is the professional association that represents psychologists in Texas. Our association is involved in public education, public relations, professional development, legislative, and advocacy efforts throughout the year. With more than 1,800 members, our five-member team is small but strong.

EXPERIENCE YOU WILL GAIN. The communication intern will gain meaningful, real-world experience in four key areas of focus: research, planning, implementation, and evaluation. You can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in or assisting with many of the following activities:

  • Preparing media lists, news releases, fact sheets, marketing collateral material
  • Enhancing the association’s social media presence by helping manage social channels including monitoring social media web analytics and providing reports of growth and other activity
  • Drafting and editing copy for social channels and segmented membership marketing efforts
  • Brainstorming ideas for innovative marketing and social campaigns
  • Supporting special events such as professional development workshops and member socials
  •  Developing and implementing programs and campaigns such as TPA’s new Speakers Bureau

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should be a junior or senior seeking a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or Journalism with the following qualifications:

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Initiator and self-starter seeking to learn practical communication skills.
  • Transportation to and from the internship experience.

Hours are flexible and depend on the student’s class schedule, course requirements (if applicable) and availability. Hours per week: 12-15 | Wage/Salary: Hourly.
