TPA Statement on Reparative Therapy

TPA MAKES Statement AGAINST Reparative Therapy

Cedar Park, Texas, June 10, 2014 — Psychology is a science subjected to critical research and evaluation of efficacy.  The Texas Psychological Association (TPA), which represents doctoral-level trained Texas psychologists, also supports the use of empirically supported treatments for a variety of conditions.  Because of TPA’s commitment to science and in light of the current body of research, we cannot support the GOP’s platform statement indicating the “value” of reparative therapy.

An American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force addressed the issue of efficacy of sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) and stated, “There is insufficient evidence to support the use of psychological interventions to change sexual orientation.”  There is practical evidence that sound psychological treatments help people understand, positively adjust and adapt to their life circumstances.

The mission of TPA is to represent and advocate for the science and practice of psychology to help improve the human condition.  We also are an organization that embraces diversity – a concept that includes the positions of psychologists on both sides of this issue.  Although research continues, the conclusions reached by APA in peer-reviewed studies since 1960 suggest that the ‘value’ of reparative therapy has not been demonstrated empirically.
