April 2018 Sunset Committee Hearing
Share |

Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP) will be going through Sunset in 2019 since our sunset legislation failed to pass last session. As you recall, last session the Sunset Commission recommended that TSBEP be consolidated with all the other mental health boards (LPC, MFT, SW) to create an umbrella mental health agency.  The Sunset Commission staff has completed their review of our agency and last week released their recommendations for the upcoming session.  Their recommendation, once again, encourages the legislature to combine all the mental health boards into a single agency referred to as the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC).

The Sunset Commission will be having a hearing at the Capitol on Wednesday, April 25th to hear public comments on whether this model is appropriate to regulate mental health professionals.  TPA is asking you to come to Austin and testify* in front of the Sunset Commission. Our goal is to show, in numbers, that we are strongly opposed to this consolidation model.  TPA will be providing in-depth training and talking points by email and via phone conferences to any volunteer who plans to come to Austin, in addition to providing the option of a face-to-face meeting with our governmental relations staff to discuss your testimony the evening of April 24th .  We plan to be strategic with our testimony, so please be prepared to modify your own testimony as we prepare for the hearing.

We are also using this opportunity to have a Legislative Day at the Capitol on this date, so even if you will not be testifying, we encourage you to come and visit with your legislators and their staff. It is important that TPA’s voice is heard.  Your local area society may be organizing a carpool to travel to Austin.

Please let us know if you can come to Austin and support TPA’s position of opposing this consolidation, or any of the other Sunset recommendations. Complete the form below if you plan to come and note whether you would like to testify on April 25th.  There is no need to complete the form again if you completed it previously.  Even if you simply come to register your opposition, your presence matters.

You can read the report here.

Thank you,

David White
Executive Director
